Community AIR
There is a non-profit group in Toronto petitioning to shut down the Toronto City Centre Airport, YTZ (also known as Island Airport). Their reasoning? Pollution and noise. Nevermind the fact that Gardiner Expressway is right nearby, and generates tons more pollution, and modern Q400 turboprops operated by the local airline Porter Air make hardly any noise compared to the ambient noise from the highway.
Community AIR appears to be yet another group with a hidden agenda. I’ll bet that their primary concern is not pollution and noise, but the fact that the airport detriments an otherwise perfect view of Lake Ontario from their downtown condoes. Even if it isn’t their concern, well, nobody said that living in Downtown doesn’t have its cons. This reminds me of the people who move next to airports or otherwise noisy areas, and THEN complain about the level of noise around them and petition to divert air traffic, introduce curfews, and so on. Well, guess what? Nobody forced you to settle next to an airport, just as nobody forced you to live in Downtown next to a busy and once again growing airfield.

I agree and I live right infront of the airport and bought my condo knowing full well it was there. I can barely hear the planes over the cars honking outside my window. As per the pollution, I see a bigger cloud of smog over the Gardiner than the airport. I moved to the city to live in the city, I didn’t pretend that being by the water meant I was at some beachside cottage therefor an airport shouldn’t be there. It’s the city, expect it to expand and change. Adapt or move.
